Light and modern private home, Helsinki

Renovation of sauna facilities, bathroom, small toilet and utility room. The facilities were outdated in appearance, and their usability no longer served the family, which was increasingly in need of accessibility. Design by Terhi Lanzett.

– The customer liked marble very much, but due to the care required of real marble, we ended up choosing ceramic tiles with marble patterns instead of natural stone. In addition, the wish was to take into account accessibility and ease of use in the premises, Terhi describes the starting points of the project.

Accessibility has been taken into account by leaving enough space in the passageways by changing, among other things, the locations of the doors and their opening directions. The plans also paid attention to lighting. Efficient lights and light surfaces create a bright and modern finish.

The back wall of the bath was tiled with an eye-catching marble-patterned mosaic.

Lounge: 2 sizes of the same tile

The same ABL-Laatat Lounge tile in two different sizes was chosen for the floors in the utility room and bathroom. The 30x60 and 10x10 tiles create a unified space where falls and stairs can be taken into account. The lounge is also raised in the utility room on the walls.

– The design of the facilities went smoothly and we found the right products fairly quickly, Terhi Lanzett says.

However, challenges for the project were created by the site and the contractors, and the challenges were also overcome. Although the renovation was delayed for several months, designer Terhi and the apartment owners are pleased with the outcome. Terhi has also been able to test the sauna facilities in person, when the family invited her to come to the finished premises after the renovation.

– It was fun to get to test the operation of the facilities in a concrete way, which is often not possible in our own design sites, Terhi laughs.
